Matcha Vs Coffee: How Much Caffeine Does Matcha Have?

How much caffeine does matcha contain compared to coffee? This is a frequent question asked by coffee lovers considering a switch to matcha.

A 1g serving of matcha contains about 25mg of caffeine, while an 8 oz. serving of coffee contains about 95mg. So compared to coffee, matcha contains something less than one-third the caffeine content of matcha.

However, that's not the end of the story. Although matcha contains significantly less caffeine per serving than coffee, the energy boost you receive from matcha is gentler but lasts longer.

Picture a gradual ascent up and back down a gentle slope. That's matcha. Now picture a sharp nearly vertical climb to the top of a roller coaster peak and a sudden crash back to earth. That's coffee.

On top of the simple caffeine content, matcha contains a natural amino acid called L-Theanine, which contains calming properties.

This means that the mild caffeine content of matcha, combined with the calming presence of L-Theanine, produces a calm, gentle, sustained, mood-enhancing energy boost unlike coffee and unlike any other tea.

So in summary, matcha provides a pleasingly calm, gentle, sustained, mood-boosting energy, with just 1/3 the caffeine of coffee and no jitters or crashing.
